In addition to the right finishing machine and the right grinding/polishing media, it is frequently the choice of compound which makes the difference between a good surface finish and a great surface finish.

Why do you need compounds?

General cleaning: To remove fines (from media and/or metal) from the process to maintain the cutting ability of the media.
Corrosion protection: To provide corrosion protection for finished parts.
Degreasing: To remove oil from parts such as stampings.
